Where to stay in Mudgee wine country, and why a whole house beats a motel room for a weekend away.
Written by the owners of The Landscapers Rest, Mudgee ·
The short version
A whole house, on the edge of the vines
Mudgee has plenty of places to sleep. Motels along the highway, historic pubs on Market Street, resorts on the edge of town and a growing list of country cottages out among the vineyards. What most of them share is that you are still a guest in someone else's building, with a reception desk, shared walls and a set breakfast time.
The Landscapers Rest is the other kind of stay. It is a private two bedroom house, yours from the moment you pull into the driveway. Two cellar doors sit across the road. The town centre is a three minute drive or a twenty minute walk. Between the two you get the thing most Mudgee visitors actually want: somewhere quiet to come back to after a long lunch, with a kitchen, a fire pit and nobody else in the building.
The kinds of accommodation in Mudgee, and who each one suits
Worth knowing before you book, because the right answer changes a lot depending on who you are travelling with.
Motels and motor inns
Cheapest, most central, least private
Clustered along the main approaches into town and usually the lowest nightly rate. Good if you are passing through for one night and only need a bed and a car park. Less good for a weekend, because you will be eating out for every meal and there is nowhere to sit together in the evening.
Historic pubs and boutique hotels
Character, walkability, thin walls
Mudgee has a genuinely good stock of heritage buildings converted into boutique rooms, most within walking distance of Market Street. Lovely for a couple who want to walk to dinner. Be realistic about noise if the bar downstairs is busy on a Saturday.
Resorts and holiday parks
Facilities and families
Pools, tennis courts, playgrounds and space for kids to run. If your trip is built around the children rather than the cellar doors, this is usually the practical choice.
Whole-house stays and cottages
Privacy, a kitchen, and space to spread out
A self contained house you have entirely to yourselves. It suits two couples splitting a weekend, a small family, or anyone who wants to cook one night, light a fire and not talk to a single stranger. This is what The Landscapers Rest is.
Getting here
Where Mudgee sits, and how long the drive really takes
Mudgee is in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales: far enough west to feel like a genuine escape, close enough to the coast to be a two night trip rather than a whole week.
Sydneyapprox. 3.5 hrs via Bells Line of Road
Newcastleapprox. 3 hrs
Dubboapprox. 1.5 hrs
Mudgee town centre3 min drive · 20 min walk
Cellar doors across the roadwalk over
You will want a car. The cellar doors are spread through the valley and there is no useful public transport between them, so plan a driver, a wine tour, or a designated day of tastings within walking distance of town.
Warm days, green vines and the Mudgee Wine + Food Festival through spring. The busiest and most beautiful stretch of the year, and the one that books out furthest ahead.
Summer
December to February
Hot afternoons and long evenings. Best spent with a late start, a swim, an early cellar door session and dinner outside once the heat drops off.
Autumn
March to May
Vintage, colour through the vineyards and the most comfortable weather of the year for driving between cellar doors. A quiet favourite.
Winter
June to August
Cold nights, big reds and a wood fire. Winter Wine Weekend lands in July. This is the season the fireplace and the fire pit earn their keep.
